The Network and Communication Administrator is part of a team which is responsible for the College campus network infrastructures.
The Network and Communication Administrator performs responsibilities including designing, implementing, and maintaining the networks by managing network IP addresses, communicating network information and requirements to connect hosts onto the network, and installing, upgrading, and maintaining network routers, switches, wireless access points, wireless controllers, other network devices and servers; working with vendors to research emerging technologies and diagnose and resolve network problems; automating network tasks; utilizing multiple tools to monitor the network to ensure optimum performance and to assist in troubleshooting issues; maintaining Internet links, working with faculty, staff, and students in the integration, maintenance, and problem resolution of network services; maintaining documentation and database information of network services; and assisting in the preparation and evaluation of bid specifications for network hardware and software, as directed by the Chief Information Officer.
The Network and Communication Administrator is responsible for the installation, management and support of applications, servers, systems, network infrastructure, integrations, and monitoring of various enterprise level systems including unified communications, networking, security camera, and access control related systems.
Responsibilities include application systems, technical administration, including support of systems hardware and software management.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Assures the College's networking requirements are met with the highest level of performance and reliability in maintaining the hardware and software components of the College’s networks by providing system and security administration for information technology related hardware, operating systems, databases, and applications.
Maintains the integrity of the network by installing, upgrading, and maintaining network routers, switches, wireless, VPN, and other devices at current operating system levels as provided by the manufacturer, working with vendors to diagnose and resolve network problems, operating and configuring protocol analyzers to diagnose problems, analyzing captured data using network protocols to determine problems, and using network monitoring software to detect network conditions requiring corrective action or performance tuning.
Works with Purchasing Services to prepare and evaluate bid specifications for the purchase and maintenance of network hardware, software, and services.
Communicates issues to vendor technical support and follow through until resolved, coordinating and performing required upgrades, fixes, and patches.
Maintains and manages active directory domain environments, IP addresses, DHCP servers, Radius, router/switch routing protocols, and other servers and software systems on both physical and hypervisor server environments.
Configures, maintains, administers and supports Microsoft Office 365 tenant environments related to but not limited to phone system and calling plan.
Configures and maintains voice over internet protocol (VoIP) phone system; assist users with functions of the phone and end point operations.
Assists with maintaining e-mail systems, consisting of data integration between active directory, an identity management system, and other systems.
Assists with client connectivity, software distribution and installation issues of unified communications applications on various devices.
Assists with the installation, support, and secure applicable versions of Windows Server.
Assists with the installation, operation, and maintenance support for VMware infrastructure, virtual environments, and thin clients.
Installs, administers, maintains, and supports the infrastructure and integration of devices, servers, routers, switches, wireless access points, and network services used to make up the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN).
Installs, maintains, trains, and coordinates support for security camera systems; assists as needed to retrieve any requested video from video recording systems; monitors system to ensure functionality and daily operation.
Installs, troubleshoots, maintains and repairs access control systems including the required infrastructure, equipment, and programming of devices.
Participates in the planning and implementation of various required systems on premise or as a service.
Develops, tests, and deploys scripts using PowerShell, batch files, other scripting languages, and scheduled tasks as needed.
Reviews system and application logs to diagnose and correct problems.
Programs network applications as needed such as web, network monitoring, bandwidth utilization, general data collection, reporting, and automated response to abnormal or undesirable network conditions.
Assists with the integration, maintenance, and problem resolution of network services and wiring infrastructures by working with Information Technology staff, user support entities, vendors, and end-users including College contractors and guests.
Coordinates, provides, and supports training efforts related to supported applications.
Creates and maintains documentation (floor plans, equipment inventory, network, etc.
).
Ensures accurate records are kept of network components, network connections, accounts, and inventory.
Helps to ensure the availability of computer resources by assisting with disaster prevention and recovery efforts caused by events like power outages, hardware failures, etc.
Executes responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and the college’s policies, which includes the Code of Ethics.
Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as directed by the Chief Information Officer.
